Silver Consolidated Schools Extended Learning Program is in full effect at G.W. Stout Elementary School. The program provides outdoor activities as well as learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, math and STEM education. This past Friday they had the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish help with an archery competition where students Ruby Tina Hero, Reagan Montoya and Brody Topmiller won medals for being the top archers of the competition. Congratulations to those students on their achievement!
Pick It Up- Toss No Mas will be having a community-wide cleanup day tomorrow, June 17th. The event will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and all volunteers will meet at Gough Park parking lot. This month’s cleanup will feature a cool garden recycled art activity where participants will be able to transform plastic water bottles into colorful wind streamers. Congratulations to Calissa Ramirez and Erick Sanchez who were awarded The Lordsburg Elks Lodge #1813 college scholarships. Both students were awarded $1,000 scholarships to help with their college education. Miss Ramirez graduated from Lordsburg High School with a 4.0 GPA and plans on attending Western New Mexico University to pursue a degree in Nursing. Mr. Sanchez is a Animas High School graduate who plans on attending New Mexico State University to study Wildlife Science.
The Deming New Mexico Criminal Investigation Division recently held an event to help Girl Scouts earn their detective patch. The detectives taught various techniques like fingerprinting, dusting for prints, how to track shoe impressions and how to collect evidence at a mock crime scene they put together. They also showed a short video on the importance of paying attention to detail.
New Mexico’s “Voices for Children” recently shared data that shows there are 43,000 fewer New Mexico children living in poverty since 2010. The data also shows that children without health insurance has improved by 45%, teen birth rates are lower by 64% and the number of high school students not graduating on time has improved by 38%.
