In a significant move to address the growing crisis of human trafficking, Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services in Silver City (SRSASS & CAC) successfully hosted its first-ever Human Trafficking Conference last week, drawing over 100 participants committed to education, prevention, and collaboration. Designed to enhance the community’s response to trafficking, the conference offered comprehensive training, shared vital resources, and fostered critical networking aimed at driving effective and lasting solutions.

The New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps Commission (YCCC) has awarded $5.5 million to support 39 programs across 19 counties, leveraging an estimated $1.2 million in matching project funds. These initiatives will provide employment for 607 youth, ages 14 to 25, who will engage in a range of conservation efforts including post-fire restoration, trail enhancement, ecological monitoring, and the preservation of cultural resources. Among the projects selected for 2025 are public murals in Silver City, improvements to forests, rangelands, and recreational areas in the Gila National Forest, and the enhancement of recreational opportunities in Lordsburg.

In Luna County News:

The Luna County Board of County Commissioners recently passed Resolution 25-26, which prohibits the use of certain fireworks, including missile-type rockets, helicopters, and aerial spinners. Additionally, the resolution bans open fires, campfires, and the open burning of vegetation within the unincorporated areas of Luna County, with the exception of trash burning in a designated container located near a readily accessible water source. This resolution took effect on May 1st and will remain in place until May 30th. For any questions or concerns, the public is encouraged to contact the Luna County Planning Department.

Mayor Philip Skinner recently led a Industrial Developmental Workshop dedicated to the advancement of Columbus’s industrial sector, uniting prominent leaders and stakeholders from across the region. The event features participation from State Senator Jennifer Jones, County Manager Chris Brice, Commissioner Christie Ann Harvey, representatives from Mexico, and numerous other influential figures.
