Today we celebrate Memorial Day. Originally called “Decoration Day”, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembering those who have died in service to our country. This day was first observed on May 30th, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers. Today, Memorial Day is commemorated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave of a soldier who has died in service or battle for our country. Let us take the time today to remember all those who sacrificed their lives for the greater good of our country. Thank you to all the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We appreciate you all.
