Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

During a regular Grant County Commission meeting last week, employment contracts were renewed for County Manager, Charlene Webb, and County Attorney, Abigail Robinson. The commission expressed strong support of the work that the manger and attorney have provided so far, and each individual will continue the job at their current salary.

The American Legion Allingham-Golding Post 18, honored students that participated in Boys’ and Girls’ State over the summer. Organizer, John Sterle, led as moderator at the banquet held last Friday at the American Legion Hall in Silver City. The boys honored were: Joseph Davis of Hanover, Tatton Allsup of Mule Creek, Marshall Julian of Hurley, Escher Bowers of Silver City, Garrett Evans of Glenwood, Aubrey Palmer of Cliff, Richard Chavez of Hurley, Maurilio “Mario” Garduno of Silver City, and David Velez of Deming. The girls honored were Mattilyn Wiseman of Deming and Charlee Edwards of Silver City. In addition, Emma Rudd, a fifth grader from Calvary Christian Academy, was recognized for winning first place in Class II Western Division of the national essay contest with her entry titled, “Americanism”. Also participating in sponsoring boys and girls were the American Legion Post 4 in Deming.

The Village of Santa Clara will be working in partnership with “New Energy Economy” in creating a “Sol not Coal” demonstration project to solarize the former National Guard Armory. New Energy Economy, partners with community organizations, public agencies, and local farms to create highly visible community-scale solar installations that demonstrate the environmental, health, and economic benefits of solar energy. This project is expected to save the Village of Santa Clara thousands of dollars each year in energy costs.

The Luna County “Shop with a Cop” program is planning an “Ultimate Giveaway” raffle that features items valued over $10,000. Proceeds of the community fundraiser will benefit the children’s “Shop with a Cop” event scheduled on December 9th at the Deming Walmart store. The “Shop with a Cop” program enables students to partner with a law enforcement officer and enjoy a shopping spree before the Christmas holiday.
