The Gila Resources Information Project and the UNM INSPIRES program, collaborating with Gila Tech LLC and Aldo Leopold Charter School, have been installing Purple Air sensors to monitor particulate air quality in Grant County. The Grant County AirWISE project will provide real-time air quality measurements to our community. So far, they have installed samplers at five sites and we’ll deploy five more over the coming weeks.

In support of “National Crime Victims Crime Week”, The City of Lordsburg and the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will be holding a  “Survivor Luminaria Lighting” event this evening, April 22nd. This event is in honor of crime victims, survivors and family members. The lighting will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lordsburg Memorial Park. Luminarias will be provided. 

Western New Mexico University students Brandon Lee Miller, Ariana Zuniga, Felix Gutierrez and Gabe Farley were the top winners of WNMU’s Humanities “Creative Writing Contest”. The contest, which was held earlier this month, was in honor of “National Poetry Month”. Brandon won first place in both the poetry and prose category, Ariana and Felix tied for second place in the poetry category and Gabe placed second in the prose category. All of the winners’ work will be published in the next edition of the student-led journal “The Maverick”. Congratulations to all four winners. 

The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One Office will begin a maintenance project to place chip seal pavement on various roadways in Hidalgo County. The chip seal process is a surface treatment that will be placed on the existing pavement and is designed to seal out moisture and create a more durable surface to help extend the longevity of the roadway. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is now accepting applications for its 2024-2025 Off-Highway Vehicle Grants Program. These grants are available to not-for-profit organizations and federal, state and local government agencies. Recipients can receive up to $20,000 to use for projects that enhance recreational use of side-by-sides, ATV’s, motorcycles and snowmobiles on public lands.
