Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) along with Interstate Highway Construction will be performing bridge jacking operations on May 30th in order to repair bearing assemblies on the NM 90/Hudson Street Bridge. The contractor will utilize single lane closures with reduced speed during jacking operations. Traffic will be allowed across the bridge in each direction. Smoke emissions from the Kerr Fire will increase over the next few days due to the fire working its way across the landscape and warmer temperatures. Fire fighters are conducting the final stages of burning out, which will create a lack of fuel and reduce smoke over the weekend. Fire effects within the Kerr Fire have removed heavy fuel loads, reduced forest tree densities and ladder fuels and reduced the threat of future undesirable fire effects.
The National Weather Service in El Paso has issued a Fire Weather Watch through Thursday Evening in southwest New Mexico and far west Texas. A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur, and any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
The Silver City Town Council at its meeting today will consider a resolution to adjust property tax rates within the town. If approved, the measure will increase property taxes to make up for an expected revenue drop in the form of reduced “hold harmless” gross receipts payments. The meeting begins at 6 pm in the Grant County Administration Center.
