Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
The unofficial municipal election results are in. The Counselor seats in Silver City were uncontested, and Lynda Aiman Smith and Lupe Cano remain in their positions. Ken Ladner was elected mayor by a margin of over 300 votes. In Hurley, David Ramos remains the municipal judge and the top vote tallies for councilmen are Joseph Stevens and Richard Maynes. In Santa Clara, Andres Gomez earned the most votes for municipal judge, and the top two vote getters for the trustee positions are Albert Esparza and Victor Arambula. Bayard candidates for town councilor who earned the most votes were Zeke Santa Maria and write-in candidate Adrian Ortiz. Official results will be announced as they become available.
The Gila National Forest, in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is seeking public input on a proposal to restore native Gila trout and other native fishes to Whitewater Creek and its tributaries. The purpose of the proposed action is to contribute to the recovery of the Gila trout by restoring it to approximately 24 miles of perennial stream to establish a fishable population. The entire project area is within the Glenwood Ranger District of the Gila National Forest and the majority of the project area is within the Gila Wilderness.
The Gila National Forest, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, US Fish and Wildlife Services, and Trout Unlimited are sponsoring the 5th annual Aldo Leopold Kid’s Fishing Derby is Set for Saturday, June 4th at Lake Roberts. The Derby was suspended for a few years due to work on the spillway, but it is set to start again this year. The derby will coincide with New Mexico Free Fishing day and National Fishing and Boating Week.
In sports action, WNMU Lady ‘Stang Jordan Gutierrez earned All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honorable mention accolades this week. Originally from Albuquerque, Gutierrez led the Lady ‘Stangs in scoring per game and in 3 pointers. She had a career-high 29 points against CSU-Pueblo. She later scored a career high three-pointers made connecting on eight against UCCS, which tied her with 14 other players for sixth in the RMAC record books.
U.S. Senator Tom Udall introduced legislation to abolish the broken Federal Election Commission (FEC) and replace it with a new agency empowered to crack down on campaign finance violations. The new Federal Election Administration would be established to avoid the partisan gridlock that currently prevents the FEC from doing its job and enforcing our election laws.
