The Commons, in partnership with the Gila Community Foundation, will be assuming responsibility for the Salvation Army donation bank to continue providing essential supplies to those affected by the Trout Fire. Distribution of supplies will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Donations of needed items can be dropped off at the collection site located at the old recreation center, 1016 N. Silver Street. Community members interested in lending a hand can sign up by visiting the Commons: Center for Food Security and Sustainability Facebook page.

During its regular meeting, the Santa Clara Board of Trustees approved a 6 percent annual increase in utility rates, resulting in an approximate $5 rise for customers with minimum-charge utility bills. The updated rates will take effect in the August billing cycle. Additionally, the Board issued a proclamation declaring a Stage Two drought, maintaining existing restrictions on fireworks and the use of charcoal grills due to ongoing dry conditions. Fire Chief Larry Montoya emphasized that individuals found using prohibited fireworks will be cited for each offense.
At the recent Hidalgo County Commission meeting, the County Manager announced two generous donations totaling $20,000 from the Animas Foundation, aimed at supporting local seniors and youth. A $10,000 contribution was made to help offset financial shortfalls at the Ena Mitchell Senior Citizens Center. In addition, the foundation donated another $10,000 to support the fairgrounds improvement project, with funds specifically designated for 4-H education and development and to help enhance services and classroom activities related to the 4-H program.
