More than $1.3 million in state Government Results and Opportunity (GRO) funding is going to be allocated to Grant, Hidalgo, Catron and Luna counties. The GRO program provides funding for community programs and projects, with this year’s allocations covering areas such as education, youth activities, food security, economic development, recreation, tourism, health services, housing, public safety and workforce training. Statewide, more than $38 million in GRO funding is being distributed this year.
As demand for skilled labor continues to grow, Western New Mexico University’s dual enrollment technical programs are providing rural students with hands-on training and early access to high-demand careers. The university’s shop courses simulate real industrial work environments, allowing students to gain practical experience that can lead to local employment opportunities, including contract work. The programs help address limited career-training options in rural communities while giving young people a pathway into the skilled workforce without having to leave the region.
The third annual Hidalgo County Cancer Hope & Healing Cancer Walk was held this weekend, bringing together 18 teams and more than 120 participants. The event raised a total of $22,782.60 through team registrations and other fundraising efforts. Proceeds will support Hidalgo County residents facing cancer by helping cover medical travel and other treatment-related expenses. Since its founding, Hidalgo County Cancer Hope & Healing has provided $50,574.04 in financial assistance to 16 local families struggling with a cancer diagnosis.

County Strategies’ Opioid Remediation Collaborative of New Mexico is promoting Connections Teen, a free app designed to support teens in recovery from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. The app offers anonymous 24/7 peer support, an online community, coping resources, daily check-ins and tools to track and celebrate recovery milestones. The program also provides a “Teen Seen” community where teens can connect, build strength and support one another in recovery.
