The Silver City MainStreet Project has partnered up with First American Bank in Silver City to continue the “Downtown Gift Certificate Program”. The program helps bring shoppers and dollars into over 130 Downtown Silver City businesses and is one of the best ways to support locally owned businesses. For every dollar spent at a local business, 67 cents or more stays in the community and helps support the local economy. During The Village of Santa Clara’s Special Meeting, the council approved resolution 2023-33 which would set aside a property on the corner of Oak and Fort Bayard Street for the future construction of a food distribution center for the non profit organization The Commons. The Village plans on building a warehouse with a commercial kitchen and rooms for meetings and classes to help them better serve families and provide emergency food boxes.
As a reminder, The Silver City Rotary Club is still accepting applications for their 2024 Rotary Scholarship Competition. The scholarship awards are available to graduating high school seniors who are planning to attend a college or university in an academic or vocational program or who plan to attend a vocational or trade school. Some of the qualifications students need in order to apply include: having a 2.5 GPA and students should be able to demonstrate a commitment to their proposed field of study. In Deming News:
The Deming Public School District is planning on making improvements to three Deming Public Schools as a way to enhance students’ learning environment. Columbus Elementary School will be getting new Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units installed as well as Memorial Elementary who will also be receiving a roof replacement. My Little School, which is for Pre-K students, is set to add an auditorium or gymnasium for its students to use. These improvements are set to take place in the upcoming year.
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Off-Highway Vehicle Program has awarded $15,000 to the Deming Police Department as part of their 2023-24 OHV law enforcement overtime patrols grant cycle awards. Since 2011, the OHV Program has awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to nonprofits, land management and law-enforcement agencies. Local areas of concern have been addressed utilizing OHV-specific overtime enforcement patrols, for officers to host OHV safety training classes to certify juveniles, and conduct outreach events informing the public on OHV safety requirements. To date, thousands of hours have been dedicated by law enforcement on public lands to help keep New Mexicans of all ages safe.
