The New Mexico Department of Tourism’s Clean and Beautiful Grant program recently donated $30,520 in funds to help beautify the Town of Silver City. The awarded funds are set to be used for litter clean-up, waste reduction, youth training initiatives and landscaping in the Big Ditch area as well as at the Waterworks Building on Little Walnut Road. The funds will also be used to support costs related to Pick-It-Up Toss No Mas such as additional waste disposal bins at the towns parks, to address the graffiti and native plant maintenance at Big Ditch Park, support GRIP’s efforts to coordinate local trash clean-up and to continue recruitment of local businesses to participate in the “Business Pledge” program. 

Congratulations to former Silver City FFA member Emily Gossett who was recently selected to lead one of the largest student organizations, the National FFA. Emily was elected Western Region Vice President at the 96th National FFA Convention and Expo that occurred in November and will be taking time off from college to represent the National FFA in all 50 states. She will get the opportunity to serve in local, state, national and international activities to help inform, motivate and inspire other FFA members, advisors, state staff and teachers to help achieve the mission and core values of the National FFA organization. 

The Outdoor Recreation Division of the New Mexico Economic Development Department has awarded trails and infrastructure grants to 3 Grant County projects as part of the 2024 Outdoor Recreation Trails and Grant program. The first project to receive the funding is the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDT) who will be using the funding to help design and install two interpretive trailhead kiosks and to help support community-based stewardship work on the CDT. The second is the Heart of the Gila, who will be re-establishing The Gila River Trail from the Sapillo Confluence to the Grapevine Campground and the Native Plant Society of New Mexico, Gila Chapter, who will be using the funding to help improve the Silva Creek Botanical Garden. 

Congratulations to all the winners of the Bayard-Pride Beautification Committee’s Christmas Decorating contest that took place last week. The first place winner was Adrian Ortiz, second place went to Pat and Sam Carrasco, third place went to Mr. and Mrs. Nicolas Montoya, fourth place went to Mrs. Brandon Ortega  and the fifth place winners Mr. and Mrs. Jose Uresti.
