The Silver Consolidated School District and The Commons are partnering together to provide Christmas food boxes to those in need. They will be distributing the boxes tomorrow, December 20th at 12:30 p.m. at the Silver Schools Administration Building at 2810 North Swan Street. This will be on a first come, first serve basis.
The Grant County Community Foundation announced that the Alex Olsen and Martyn Pearson memorial fund which was opened last year, has raised over $100,000 so far this year. Due to the overwhelming support, the memorial fund will be turned into an endowed, or “Forever” fund in their memory and will exist in perpetuity to support community recreational initiatives. During their “No Shave December” event, The Silver City Police Department raised $2,500 to help provide coats to children in Grant County. The Town of Silver City and the Silver City Police Officers Association also contributed to the amount, which helped provide 127 coats for kids at all Silver City School Districts.
As a reminder, The Bayard-Pride Beautification Committee has begun their annual “Holiday Decorating Contest” for all Bayard residents and businesses. They will be giving out cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well as Honorable Mention and Best Scene. Judging will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. until December 21st. Last in our News: In the next 14 months, The Commons will be distributing over 1,000,000 pounds of food at their five Grant County Food pantries and Alimento School Partnership programs working with partners at Western New Mexico University, Cobre Schools, Silver Schools and Aldo Leopold Charter School. The Commons is the largest Food Pantry in New Mexico that relies entirely on community donations and grant support for their food programs and has been working on ending hunger and poverty in Grant County for over 20 years. They also offer opportunities to serve and educate young people through their Rooted Youth Conservation Corps program and the Commercial Kitchen/Culinary Entrepreneurship program.
