Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham recently announced that healthcare organizations in Luna, Grant and Hidalgo counties will be receiving funding through the Rural Health Care Delivery Fund that was created earlier this year. Some of the organizations receiving the funding will be the Ben Archer Health Center in Luna County, the Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Luna and Hidalgo County and Southwest Counseling Center in Grant, Luna and Hidalgo County. The Rural Health Care Delivery Fund was established to help make sure individuals have access to high quality and affordable health care in their community and will help enhance the capacity of primary care providers in rural areas.

The Tyrone Water and Wastewater Association will be holding its regular monthly board meeting this evening, December 20th at 6:30 p.m. There will be a variety of issues discussed including the construction of the new sewage lift station, which after 2 years of planning has now started. The meeting will take place at the Tyrone Community Center and Tyrone property owners and residents are encouraged to attend. 

The Silver City nonprofit organization Frontier Food Hub, recently received a $400,000 Community Food Project grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help residents in the Mining District. The Frontier Food Hub will be using the grant to work with residents in Bayard, Hurley, Santa Clara and Mimbres to help increase area food production and to provide training opportunities as well as create a community food production plan aimed specifically for Mining District community members. Over the next four years, the food hub will work on creating regional food systems with the first year focusing on building community engagement in the Mining District while continuing the food hub’s mobile farmer’s markets.  

As a reminder, The Gila National Forest is offering permits for cutting Christmas trees at all forest offices until the end of December. Free permits are available for piñon pine trees and for fourth grade holders of the “Every Kid Outdoors Pass”. Christmas tree cutting will be allowed until December 31st and is prohibited in designated wilderness areas, riparian areas, or within 200 feet of paved roads or developed recreation sites. The Grant County Community Health Council will be having their December Community Health Council Meeting tomorrow, December 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This will be a celebratory meeting with food, fun and discussion. The meeting will take place at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center’s Training Room and the public is encouraged to attend.
