The Board of Governors of Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School will be holding its monthly meeting this evening, August 13th. The agenda will include staff and student spotlights, committee reports, the Community School food distribution, HELP NM, transportation and maintenance. Also, the Director will present a monthly report and the board will enter an executive session to discuss pending litigation, limited personnel matters and property issues. The meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. at 315 East 1st Street in Deming.
In Grant County News:
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Grant County, also known as PFLAG, Board of Directors recently announced that members Natalee Drissell and Dade Girven were chosen as this year’s recipients of the Nancy Kailing Memorial Scholarship at Western New Mexico University. Natalee is a sophomore at WNMU who is majoring in Fine Arts and is an active member of the Art and Horticulture clubs at the university. Dade is a Psychology major at WNMU and was one of the founders of the Gardening Club, which became the de facto LGBTQ student club at Ruidoso High School. The scholarship is in honor of Nancy Kailing, PFLAG mom and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Congratulations to both students.
The Town of Silver City is letting its residents know that the town’s street division will be chip sealing several streets along Little Walnut Road through August 16th. All vehicles must be moved off the street during construction. Signage will be made available to assist residents and visitors with detours and construction areas and all residents traveling through the area are asked to drive with caution to avoid driving over wet oil. Earlier this year the Silver City Consolidated school systems received a $6 million “Mental Health Grant” from the U.S. Department of Education to help expand mental health services in local schools. The grant money will be used to hire mental health professionals for every school in the district and to help develop treatment programs which can be expanded to student and family support and resources to help create a positive school climate.
