The Silver City Town Council held a regular meeting where officials discussed a $906,000 Interstate Stream Commission grant for a potable water system asset management plan that will centralize infrastructure records and information. The town also received a $250,000 grant for improvements to the Water Works building and is nearing completion of $86,000 in ADA improvements at the Big Ditch. Additional updates included housing initiative efforts connected to a potential $1.8 million workforce funding opportunity and a $99,000 active transportation plan focused on improving accessibility and safety along Highway 180.
Freeport-McMoRan is encouraging Grant County residents ages 18 and older to participate in the confidential Local Voices Community Engagement Survey conducted independently by Voconiq. The survey, open through June 30, is designed to gather community feedback on Freeport’s operations and engagement efforts and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Each completed survey generates a donation to local organizations, and participants will also be entered into a raffle for one of three $250 gift cards. The City of Deming celebrated the first local cohort of Project SEARCH, a nationally recognized workforce development program that helps young adults with disabilities gain hands-on workplace experience and career readiness skills. The program has evolved beyond workforce development into a broader initiative focused on inclusion, opportunity and public service. Officials also highlighted how the internship experience strengthened community connections by empowering participants and reinforcing the importance of serving one another.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service and New Mexico Agriculture in the Classroom are supporting hands-on agricultural education statewide through the New Mexico Grow Project Grant program. More than nine recipients were selected for the program, including La Plata Middle School. The initiative provides schools with garden beds, hydroponic systems, classroom resources and STEM-based learning opportunities designed to strengthen agriculture, conservation, nutrition and real-world problem-solving skills. The program also helps students develop vocational and leadership experience through practical agricultural education.
