The Town of Silver City’s Downtown Action and Planning Committee will meet Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 9 a.m. in the upstairs conference room of the Town Hall Annex to discuss several initiatives affecting the downtown district. The agenda includes reviewing a streetlight survey, discussing downtown flashing speed limit signs to improve traffic safety, considering Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funding requests submitted by the city, hearing committee comments, and providing an opportunity for public input. The public is invited to attend.
The New Mexico Tourism Department has awarded more than $2.6 million in Cooperative Marketing Grant funding to rural communities for fiscal year 2027 to promote regional tourism and support local economies. Southwest New Mexico recipients include the Town of Silver City, which received $95,000; Grant County, $70,220.67; the Lordsburg Economic Advancement Project, $27,314; and the City of Deming, $83,458. The program aims to attract more travelers as demand grows for affordable, drive-to destinations.
During a special meeting, the Luna County Commission declared a local disaster following recent flooding that caused significant damage to county infrastructure, including Hermanas Road, sections of N.M. 9 and areas impacted by the Bassett Lake dam failure. The declaration allows the county to seek state disaster assistance and reimbursement while officials document damages. Commissioners also approved the county’s fourth-quarter financial report, final budget transfers and the fiscal year 2026-27 final budget.

New Mexico families still have time to get children caught up on required back-to-school vaccinations at no cost through Aug. 29. The New Mexico Department of Health, in partnership with the New Mexico Primary Care Association and the New Mexico Immunization Coalition, is offering free immunization clinics at 69 locations statewide, with evening and weekend hours available. The clinics are open to children from birth through age 18, and a list of participating locations can be found at website.
