The Village of Columbus City Workers are currently conducting a cleanup of Highway 11 as part of the ongoing effort to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the village. Residents and visitors are asked to drive slowly and exercise caution when passing areas marked with orange road cones. This initiative supports the safety of the workers and contributes to the continued improvement of the community. The village appreciates everyone’s cooperation in ensuring a safe and successful cleanup effort.

In Grant County news: 

The Gila National Forest, Glenwood Ranger District, has collaborated with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish to carry out a fish habitat restoration project along a 0.25-mile stretch of Whitewater Creek.. The primary objective of the restoration effort is to modify the stream channel to create additional pools and establish a deeper, narrower channel, which will enhance shelter habitats and promote bank stability. The project is set to begin as early as February 20th and will continue through the end of March. While the Catwalk Recreation Area and the Catwalk National Recreation Trail will remain open during project activities, public access to the stream will be restricted for fishing or other recreational activities within the designated construction zone.

In honor of the 147th anniversary of Silver City’s Territorial Charter, Pick It Up–Toss No Más is hosting an exciting community cleanup on Saturday, February 15th. Volunteers will come together to make a positive impact, with all supplies provided, including trash bags, trash pickers, gloves, coffee, and donuts. The event kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot, and everyone is encouraged to join in and help beautify the community. 

Western New Mexico University (WNMU) is seeking $15 million in funding from the New Mexico Legislature to enhance its infrastructure and support its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Recently, WNMU installed four fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on campus, each capable of charging two vehicles simultaneously, which are provided at no cost to the public. With the requested funding, WNMU plans to expand its solar panel installations, improve energy efficiency, and increase the number of EV charging stations on campus. These initiatives aim to promote the use of electric vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
