Here is a look at some local news:

At the time of this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced 4,493 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases. There have been 89,032 tests performed statewide, 197 current COVID-19 related hospitalizations, and 1,125 cases designated as having recovered according to the Department of Health.  In addition, sadly there has been 172 COVID-19 related deaths recorded statewide. Positive COVID-19 cases in Grant County remain at 15, Luna County at 7, Catron County at 2, and Hidalgo County with no confirmed cases.

The Gila National Forest reported that the Gordon Fire started yesterday, May 7th burning on National Forest System lands two miles south of Rancho Grande Subdivision, Reserve Ranger District, Catron County.  The strategy for this fire is full suppression. The fire has been lined and is expected to be contained this afternoon. Two Type 6 engines and the Gila IHC are working on mopping up and securing the perimeter. At the time of this report, the size of the fire reached 12 acres burning Ponderosa Pine. The cause of the fire is under investigation. In other Gila National Forest news, the Catwalk Recreation Area and Whitewater Picnic Area has been reopened. The low water crossing right before the parking lot has a small amount of standing water and visitors are advised to be cautious as snow melt continues and could cause the water to rise. In addition, the restrooms will be open and visitors should bring their own hand sanitizer.

Grant County is opening an alternative Early Voting site for the 2020 Primary elections. Voters may cast their ballots at the Bayard Community Center starting on Saturday, May 16th from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and will continue Tuesdays through Saturdays until May 30th. Luna County will be opening an alternative Early Voting site at the Mimbres Valley Learning Center Saturday, May 16th continuing through Saturday, May 30th, Tuesdays through Fridays  11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. and Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Hidalgo County early voting is at the County Clerk’s office on weekdays from 9:00 to 5:00 through May 29th.
