Here is a look at some local news:

At the time of this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced 4,291 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases. There have been 85,684 tests performed statewide, 193 current COVID-19 related hospitalizations, and 1,073 cases designated as having recovered according to the Department of Health.  In addition, sadly there has been 169 COVID-19 related deaths recorded statewide. Positive COVID-19 cases in Grant County remain at 15, Luna County at 7, Catron County at 2, and Hidalgo County with no confirmed cases.

Silver Consolidated Schools has announced the opening of Fox Field and Ben Altamirano Field per the guidance of the public health order and the Town of Silver City guidelines. Fox Field and Ben Altamirano Fields will be open for recreation with the following guidelines:

  • No more than groups of 5 people
  • Social Distancing of at least 6 feet between groups
  • Bathrooms are closed to public use
  • Any park that has playground equipment will remain closed until May 15th

In addition, the public should be aware that if these guidelines are not followed, the District will have to re-evaluate facility usage and may have to close these facilities to ensure public health and safety.

Southwestern Railroad has begun operations over the portion of railroad stretching from Hurley, Bayard, Hanover, and Fierro this week. They will be performing light maintenance and by the end of this week we will ramp up to full rail operations. It is expected that two trains will be operating Monday through Friday between 7:00am to 6:00pm from now until early June. Train service has not been utilized on these portions of railroad consistently or at all since 2014 and 2015. In addition, if there is an emergency on or near the tracks such as a disabled vehicle on the tracks or other emergency, there are blue information signs with a staffed 24 hour phone number that persons should call to notify the railroad of such emergencies. These signs are placed at every railroad crossing.
