The Grant Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking private landowners who are interested in participating in a noxious weed management project. The project will include weed identification, mapping, herbicide and/or mechanical treatment, evaluation, and periodic monitoring. To be eligible to participate the property must be located within Grant and Hidalgo Counties and must have Class A, B or C noxious weeds present. Congratulations to The Deming All Stars who won the New Mexico District 7 baseball championship in the major division this past weekend. The team of 11 to 12 year old boys achieved a 15-5 win over the Silver City All Stars which earned them a spot in the New Mexico Little League State Tournament on July 14th. Good luck to them at the State Tournament!

The Silver City Public Library will be hosting a “Bike Maintenance” clinic on July 8th for kids up to age 18. The clinic will show youth basic maintenance skills that are needed to keep bikes in good working condition. This event will take place at the Bike Works Shop from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is free to all who attend. For more information call 575-538-3672.

The Farm Bill, which affects New Mexico agriculture and their consumers, is set to be renewed this year and is looking for the public’s opinion. The bill encompasses many New Mexico programs including the Conservation Reserve Program, Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Conservation Stewardship Program. If renewed, the bill will provide an opportunity for producers and consumers to make decisions about what commodities to grow, what conservation practices to invest in and the requirements needed to establish the nutrition programs that affect New Mexico the most. The Grant County Public Health Office will be providing no-cost back-to-school vaccinations for children ages 18 and under starting July 11th to August 30th. Parents are asked to bring their child’s shot record and insurance, although insurance will not be required, they still ask that parents bring a copy of their card if they do have medical coverage.
