Smithsonian Magazine recently named Silver City as one of the “Best Small Towns to Visit in 2024” in their June issue. Each year, the magazine celebrates the many small towns that have vast cultural experiences, superb nature, a variety of activities and events and make up the “Heart” of America. Silver City was recognized for the Gila Cliff Dwellings, art galleries, fine dining, the Pinos Altos Mountains and for its “Old West” charm. The city was also recognized for the Gila National Forest, which contains over three million acres of forest, mountains and open range that is perfect for hiking, camping and stargazing.
The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District has temporarily closed the Bead Springs Trailhead, located along Willow Creek to work on two stream and riparian restoration projects for the next couple of months. The project is part of a larger, multi-year project to restore Willow Creek and tributaries Little Turkey Creek and Gilita Creek from damage from the 2012 Whitewater Baldy Fire. The work projects aim to increase the sinuosity of the streams, slow down the flow of water, increase stream shading and increase fish habitat diversity. Ultimately, the goal is to restore the stream so that a self-sustaining Gila trout population may one day be returned to the Willow Creek watershed.
