The Village of Santa Clara’s Action Committee would like to thank all those who supported the organization this past year, whether by volunteering or donating money. The committee is also asking residents to join them for their next meeting to see what goes on and to find out how you can make a difference in the community. The Gila National Forest will continue to implement a number of prescribed fires in the upcoming weeks as weather and fire conditions permit. Prescribed fire projects may include pile burning, which is used to consume piled woody slash and broadcast burning, which is when fire is applied across a predefined area of landscape. The prescribed fire projects will be in the Wilderness, Glenwood and Silver City Ranger Districts and will be taking place in the upcoming months.
The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Conference recently selected the non-profit organization, Kiwanis Club as their December 2023 Spotlight Member. The Kiwanis Club of Silver City has been helping out the community and surrounding areas for over 75 years in a variety of ways, including sponsoring youth groups, highway clean-ups, raising money, and having support groups for children. They also sponsor Kiwanis-family organizations and provide youth recognition and leadership opportunities throughout Grant County. Congratulations to the winners of the Lordsburg Elks Lodge #1813 local “Hoop Shot” that took place at the end of December. Ethan Aguilera and Shealynn Guerrero won the boys and girls 8 to 9 year old category. Sophia Salinas won the girls 10 to 11 year old category and Dani Esquivel who won the girls 12 to 13 year old category. The group will be competing at the New Mexico Southwest District Hoop Shoot in El Paso this month. Good luck to all the students.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has closed New Mexico 159, Bursum Road to the Willow Creek Campground for the upcoming winter months. The closure is in place due to winter weather conditions making roadways impassible. The public is asked to use US 180 to New Mexico 12 and Reserve Beaverhead Road for those wanting access to Willow Creek, Snow Lake and the Gila National Forest.
