The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents recently approved three new programs as part of the university’s Five-Year Plan for New Degree Programs. The programs will include undergraduate certificates in HVAC, diesel mechanics and plumbing and will be housed in the new Career Technical Education Center. The New Degree Program is part of WNMU’s Five-Year Campus Master Plan, which includes multiple projects that will be taking place between 2023 and 2028 to help the university better support the community, support future growth and establish goals for campus-wide sustainability.
The nonprofit organization Grant County College Bound will be hosting “College Prep Lunch and Learns” every Tuesday at Silver High School in room 209 during the lunch hour. These sessions are to help students who are planning on attending college by providing them with the tools necessary to prepare for, enroll in and get accepted into a college or university through tutoring, mentoring and enrichment activities. Congratulations to fifth grade teacher Magali Gomez who was awarded the 2023-24 Milken Educator Award, which honors top educators around the country. Ms. Gomez teaches at Ruben S. Torres Elementary School in Deming and is known as an innovative educator who drives student-led learning and embraces methodologies such as empowering students to use data-trackers to chart their growth, incorporates color-coded strategies for learning math and is always looking for ways to inspire students to see a future career for themselves. The award also comes with $25,000, a lifelong membership to the Milken Educator Network and an all expenses paid Milken Educator Awards Forum in Los Angeles in 2024.
The Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce is having a Gingerbread House Contest this Sunday, December 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Pavilion Courthouse. Participants are to bring their pre-made Gingerbread House to enter the contest and the houses with the most votes from the community will win. Voting will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the winner being announced at 4:30 p.m. All community members are encouraged to stop by and vote for their favorite gingerbread house. Prizes will be awarded to both children and adults.
