The National Forest System Roads NFSR 282 and NSFR 878, which cover the entire length of Goose Lake Trail #238 and Dorsey Canyon Trail #239, have been closed due to the Turkey Fire. The purpose of the closure is to protect public health and safety from hazardous road and trail conditions stemming from fire suppression activities. The closure will be in effect until December 31st at 11:30 p.m. As of today, the Turkey Fire, which was caused by lightning and is located 9 miles near Cliff, has 63 personnel assigned to it and has burned 5,200 acres. The fire has experienced some rainfall over the last few days and the fire behavior is slowing.
Silver Schools is offering “Care Solace” a Mental Health Coordination Service for Silver Consolidated School Administration students, staff and their families. The service helps those who are suffering from depression, anxiety and stress and helps assign those in need of help to a provider that matches their needs. Luna County SWAGG, Juvenile Justice Continuum of Services and the Adult Treatment Court will be sponsoring a “School Supply Drive” tomorrow, August 17th. They will be giving away free backpacks with school supplies to children K-12. The giveaway will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Luna County Pavilion and is on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last.
The Gila National Forest is partnering with Bat Conservation International to implement habitat recovery and restoration projects across the Forest. Bat Conservation International will oversee a contract for aerial seeding of 7,617 acres of land where the Black Fire burned at high severity to help improve conditions within degraded watersheds. This seeding will assist with recovery of surface vegetation, reducing further watershed erosion and sedimentation. For more information, visit the website.
The Gila Cliff Dwellings will be having an “Gila and its People ”event to give community members the opportunity to learn about the 2,000 years of human occupation and cultural development of the Gila Forks region. This event will take place on August 18th at 10:30 a.m. and all interested are to meet at the picnic tables behind the Western National Parks Association bookstore at the trailhead for the Gila Cliff Dwellings.
The Town of Silver City has two council seats that are up for re-election this year, town council District 1 and District 3. Interested candidates must file a declaration of candidacy form at the Grant County Clerk’s office on August 29th, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Declaration of candidacy forms are available online at website under “candidates and campaigns”, or at the county clerk’s office.
