Last week, the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department Secretary, Elizabeth Groginsky, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony of the El Grito de Bosque Early Learning Center in Silver City. According to a news release, the previous center was set to close permanently, but Grant County was able to acquire ownership of the building and work with Misty Pugmire, director of the El Grito Inc., thereby remodeling and expanding operations using a mix of American Rescue Act funds provided by the Early Childhood Education and Care Department and Grant County. The center will provide care for up to 56 children ages six-weeks to three years old.
Students from Silver High School competed virtually in the National History Day State competition, with many earning 1st and 2nd place allowing them to compete in the national competition. The 2021-2022 theme was Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences. The top two projects from every category are invited to the National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. This year the national competition will be held virtually. Local first and second place winners going to Nationals are: Colton Traeger; Mitchell Konopnicki; Mikeaela Johnson; Maleah Diaz; Elizabeth McDonald; Daniella Holgiun; Michael Caulkins; Anson Beck; Avery Beck; Isaac Beck; Sophia Abeyta; Lauren Brueggmann, Addison Drennen; and Faith Pellegrino. Winners awarded third place include: Makayla Martinez; Joshua Beck; Carina Frisch; and Jacob Halbison. Special award winners were awarded to: Gabby Castillo; Dominque Guttierez; Makayla Martinez; and the Silver High School Group Performance.
Today we recognize National Pet Day in celebration of the joy that pets bring to us every day of the year. Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Therefore, people are encouraged to adopt from local shelters when seeking a pet companion.
