A Hurley man has been arrested in the matter of an armed robbery that occurred on October 8th at Silver City Jewelers in Downtown Silver City. According to the Silver City Daily Press, Cruz Placencio, 24, was arrested last Tuesday and has been charged with five criminal counts. Reports state the alleged robber entered the store on October 9th approximately 11:54 A.M., pointed a handgun at the clerk, demanded cash, took items for the showcases and pepper sprayed the clerk before fleeing on foot. Placencio, was booked into the Grant County Detention Center on October 15th.
A celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad was held on Saturday with the arrival of Big Boy Locomotive No. 4014 in Lordsburg. Crowds of spectators gathered for the arrival and were treated to introductions by area officials and live music. Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014, the largest steam locomotive in the world, has been touring the Union Pacific system throughout 2019 to commemorate the transcontinental railroad’s 150th anniversary. Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941 to handle the steep terrain between Cheyenne and Ogden. Of the eight still in existence, No. 4014 was the world’s only operating Big Boy. After two years of meticulous restoration work by the Union Pacific Steam Team. No. 4014, this is the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive.

Now in its 12th year, this grassroots movement as brought millions of teens, parents, schools, law enforcement, advocates, and policymakers from across the country together to tackle the number one cause of death for teens in the U.S. – car crashes. Most of the topics covered include: Phone Use; engaging in risky behaviors when driving with passengers; speeding; drunk driving; and seat belt use.
