Marine Corps League Gaffney-Oglesby Detachment 1328 presented a scholarship to 2019 graduate of Silver High School, Isabelle Vinson. The check was presented by Senior Vice President Shawn Wells, Commandant George Morrison II, and Scholarship Chairman, Danna Lopez. In addition to awarding the scholarship, Marine Corps League Gaffney-Oglesby Detachment 1328 and the Marine Corps Reserves are participating in the 2019 Toys for Tots campaign to help a little Christmas to children in in Grant County. This year is the 72nd year that more than 800 Marine Corp Reserves centers and local community organizations have collected and distributed toys across the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and other U.S territories. Last year over 1,900 children In Grant County received brand new toys because of the generosity of the local community. People can leave a new unwrapped toy for a child ages birth through 17 by November 29th at many locations in Grant County that have the official white and red Toys for Tots boxes.
In a release issued by the Forest Service Gila National Forest, the Silver City Ranger District is planning a vegetation treatment this fall to reduce hazardous fuels conditions, protect private property, and improve wildlife habitat. The Jaybird Prescribed Fire is planned for the mid-November or early December depending on appropriate weather conditions. This 2,400-acre prescribed fire lies to the north of the Signal Peak area along NM Highway 15 and Meadow Creek Road. The project will take three-four days to implement. NM Highway 15 will have public safety personnel to escort traffic through the area during this time and drivers should expect delays of approximately 15-20 minutes. Smoke will likely settle into the Lake Roberts and Upper Mimbres Valley during implementation, primarily at night. The increase in smoke is expected to last for four-five days. The project area and Meadow Creek Road will be closed during this time, but NM Highway 15 will remain open. There will be a Temporary Area Closure Order in conjunction with this prescribed fire for firefighter and public safety.
