Area military veterans were honored during a special at ceremony Fort Bayard National Cemetery in commemorating Veterans Day 2017. Members of the Allingham-Golding American Legion Post 18 and ladies from the American Legion Auxillary, presented the ceremony and welcomed veterans and the public to the memorial site. Navy Veteran, Jim Dines, performed “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes, Lorraine Anglin sang the national anthem, and the Hi-Lo Silvers performed two songs that included “This is My Country” and a “Salute to the Armed Forces” medley. The keynote address was delivered by retired United States Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, Patrick A. Tedford, and United State Marine veteran, Frank Donahue, introduced the Gold Star Mothers.

The Silver City Daily Press and Independent took home 10 awards in the 2017 New Mexico Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, presented during the 109th Annual New Mexico Press Association Convention held in Bernalillo this past weekend. This year’s contest entries were judged by members of the Arizona Newspapers Association. Daily Press Office and Advertising Manager Desiree Delgado, who has worked for the newspaper for nine years, took home five awards for her advertising design. Delgado also shared a first place award with Debbie Seibel and page designer Mikey Torrez for best Classified Ad Section. Publisher Nickolas Seibel was awarded first place in the Newspaper Event Ad category, while Reporter Benjamin Fisher continued his streak with another first place award for his reporting in the Environmental or Agriculture Writing category. Sports Editor Dean Thompson took home Second Place for Best Sports Photo, and the Press took home second place awards for Best News Coverage and Editorials. During the convention, Publisher Nickolas Seibel was also elected to lead the Press Association as president for the coming year. The press association exists to improve the quality of member newspapers, encourage high journalistic standards, promote journalism education and seeks to protect the rights of free speech for its members as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America.

 

Former Silver Consolidated School District School Board President, Frances Vasquez, has resigned from the school board effective November 10th. Vasquez was elected to the Board in 2015 representing District 3 and her term would have ended in February 2019. There are now two out of five seats vacant on the school board.

Representatives from the U.S Air Force’s Holloman Air Force Base will be attending a special meeting of the Grant County Commission this evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Grant County Administration Building in Silver City. The discussion will revolve around the environmental impact of a proposed expansion of jet training flights over the Gila National Forest and some Grant County communities.

The library at the new Deming High School is hosting a special open house to introduce the new library and its services to the community. In addition to the open house, DHS Media services will present several local authors that will sign copies of their published works. The library is being re-branded as “InformationNation! Transformation!”  due to libraries offering more than books, by adding internet and electronic information. The “open house” is scheduled for this Thursday evening.
