Luna County commissioners will consider a wide range of county business during their regular meeting, including the appointment of a new code enforcement officer and updates on county projects and the CPOE Diversion Berm Project. The commission will also review partnership agreements with numerous local organizations, and vote on funding resolutions for road and water infrastructure projects, appointments to the Commission of Freeholders, and a resolution concerning the Gila National Forest Land Management Plan revision. The meeting begins at 2 p.m. July 16 in the Luna County Commission Chambers.
Silver Consolidated Schools has begun a major transition as part of its district consolidation, with classroom moves scheduled over the next 10 days. Sixth-grade classrooms from Harrison, Jose Barrios, and Stout are being relocated to La Plata Middle School, where all district sixth graders will attend this fall. Once that move is complete, K–5 classrooms from Jose Barrios will be transferred to Harrison and Stout Elementary School, followed by classroom relocations from Sixth Street Elementary.
The Hidalgo County Commission approved a slight salary increase for elected officials during its July meeting. Commissioners also approved a medical services agreement with Roadrunner Health Services for the county detention center. In addition, they discussed displaying donated replicas of the Charters of Freedom during the courthouse’s 100th anniversary celebration and established committees to draft potential moratorium ordinances addressing data centers, mining, geothermal development, solar facilities, and wind farms.

The Sacaton Fire burning in the Gila Wilderness has grown to an estimated 9,861 acres and is 80% contained as of July 15. The Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team will be transitioning the Sacaton Fire back to the Gila National Forest this afternoon. Fire crews have continued suppression repair efforts, including chipping and hauling debris, grading Bursum Road to Willow Creek, reopening the road, and removing structure protection equipment from the Willow Creek subdivision and Mogollon Lookout. Wildlife specialists also rescued 75 Gila trout from the fire area, relocating them to the Mora National Fish Hatchery to help preserve the species.
