The Silver City’s Downtown Action and Planning Committee is working to revive the use of tax increment financing (TIF) funds that have gone largely unused for the past four years to support improvements in Silver City’s downtown district. The committee discussed using the estimated funds for infrastructure projects, security cameras, improved lighting and matching grants to help reduce crime, enhance public spaces and encourage investment.
Gila Regional Medical Center has selected the Silver City Gospel Mission as the recipient of its second-quarter Gila Regional CARES Program donation, funded through proceeds from cafeteria sales. The CARES Program supports local nonprofit organizations that make a meaningful impact in Grant County, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to giving back to the community. The Silver City Gospel Mission has served Grant County for more than 40 years, providing essential assistance, hope and support to individuals and families facing hardship.
Western New Mexico University has been designated the Southwest Hub for the STEM Innovation Network of New Mexico, expanding science, technology, engineering and math education opportunities across the region. The hub will focus on strengthening STEM education, creating workforce pathways for rural students and partnering with schools, local industries and higher education institutions to prepare students for high-demand careers. Initial efforts include expanding teacher training, supporting youth STEM programs and developing new career and after-school learning opportunities throughout southwest New Mexico.

Western New Mexico Communications has begun installing fiber optic cable from Highway 90 to the Jack’s Peak communication tower site to expand high-speed broadband capacity in the region. The project will improve connectivity for major mobile phone carriers, internet and wireless providers, radio systems and public safety communications. Construction will begin with duct installation along roadways and is expected to be completed by mid-August.
