Due to the recent prescribed burns, The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is advising the public to contact land management before going hunting. Prescribed burns, wildfires and closures that could affect hunting may occur on public lands or be conducted by land-management agencies during hunting season. In Grant County News:

The Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division, in cooperation with the New Department of Transportation and the United States Forest Service will be having a public meeting on the “Grant County Bridges Project”. The purpose of the project is to address deteriorated bridges and drainage structures and safety concerns with the water crossing along New Mexico 35, which provides primary access to the Gila National Forest. The meeting will take place this evening, January 17th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mimbres Roundup Lodge. The  public is encouraged to attend.

Thanks to community members and supporters, the Silver City Museum had significant milestones that made 2023 one of the most successful years. They had the unveiling of “Nuestra Voz: The Chihuahua Hill Story” which chronicles the neighborhood’s history. The museum also revamped the Silver City Museum Society’s website, forged new partnerships with numerous regional organizations and businesses and expanded with new staff and volunteers. In 2024, the Silver City Museum plans to continue to grow and serve Grant County by expanding their services and creating more community involvement opportunities. 

Congratulations to Silver High School Marching Band member Saferino Hughes who was chosen to  represent Silver City at the 2024 All -State Music Festival. Mr. Hughes is part of over 900 students who were chosen from all over New Mexico to participate in eight All-State Ensembles over a two day period at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. 

As a reminder, The Gila National Forest is reminding all visitors that in order to provide for public health and safety and to mitigate impacts on natural resources, camping for longer than 14 days in a consecutive 30-day period is prohibited. This includes all National Forest Service lands within the boundaries of the Gila National Forest. This order will remain in effect until May 2025. Visit website for more information.
