Animas Schools recently participated in the Mock Trial Qualifiers in Albuquerque this past week, where they went up against 40 other teams from across New Mexico. The Animas Green team won the Michelle Giger Civility and Professionalism award and also qualified for the State Mock Trial finals competition that will be held next month. Congratulations to the Animas Green team and good luck at the State Finals. 

In Grant County News: The Silver City Future Farmers of America recently held “FFA Week” which included sign painting, Greenhand Discovery hand painting and staff appreciation. During the last day of FFA week, the Silver City, Cobre and Cliff FFA Chapters all competed in the Ag Olympics that included a hay toss, roping, milk bottle race and a food relay. The Silver City Chapter came in third place, second place went to Cliff and first place went to the Cobre Chapter. Congratulations to all the competitors. 

As a reminder, Earth Ways Outdoors, is offering “Walkabout” for children 8 to 13 years old in Grant County who are interested in exploring the outdoors. The program provides children the opportunity to get to know the local creeks, hillsides and forests in the area through group nature exploration, awareness games, guided nature observation and more. The program takes place the 2nd Friday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and meets at the Bayard Community Center. For more information, call 575-519-9232. 

The Silver City MainStreet Project is conducting a survey asking for community input on what areas of Downtown Silver City they would like to see improved. For those who want to get involved in-person, The Silver City MainStreet Project will be having a “Community Walking Tour” and meeting on March 4th to discuss the possible improvements that can be made to make Downtown Silver City a more vibrant and healthy environment for business, residents and visitors. The tour will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Visitors Center and the meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Silco Theatre. Pick it Up-Toss No Mas would like to thank all the volunteers that came out and made the February “Spread the Love” Community Cleanup event such a huge success. There were 31 individuals and 6 teams that volunteered their time and efforts to help beautify Silver City. Over 1,066 pounds of trash and debris were collected from the Big Ditch Park, Penny Park, San Vicente Creek, College Street and 32nd Bypass Road. The winners of the most trash collected were Loren Poole and team “Fight Like a Girl”.
