The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) has officially started their “Operation Holiday Cheer 2023” event to help spread joy and cheer to residents and staff at Fort Bayard Medical Center. DVS is asking New Mexicans to send Christmas cards to veterans thanking them for their service to our country and to staff members to show them appreciation for their hard work and dedication in taking care of veterans during the holiday season and all year round. During the Western New Mexico University’s 2023 Fall graduation ceremony, the School of Nursing hosted their traditional pinning ceremony, a time-honored symbolic presentation representing students’ transition from student to nurse. For the very first time, all 15 Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates were presented gold ropes and inducted into the School of Nursing Honors Society, an accomplishment indicative of the dedication and commitment WNMU students have toward passionate patient care. Congratulations to all the students of the 2023 graduating class and good luck in your future endeavors. 

The Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce will be having an “Ugly Sweater” contest on December 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Those interested in participating must find the “Ugly Sweater” photo sign at the Luna County Courthouse Park, take a photo and post it to their Facebook page. Participants must tag the Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce when posting photos for a chance to win $100. Winners will be announced, with their winning photo on December 19th on Facebook. The Silver City Police Department recently recognized Taylor McWhorter, a freshman at Silver High School for raising money to purchase much needed items for the High Desert Humane Society. Taylor raised $500 by selling food plates, baked goods and by having yard sales. With the money she raised she was able to provide the Humane Society with 5, nine pound bags of dog food, 5 cases of dog treats and 10 dog blankets.

The Bayard-Pride Beautification Committee will be having their annual “Holiday Decoration Contest” for all Bayard residents and businesses. There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well as Honorable Mention and Best Scene.
