Grant County 4-H members Reece and Rowan McSpadden represented their community at the AQHYA World Championship Show Horse Judging Contest earlier this month. Competing in the limited division, Reece and Rowan evaluated eight different horse classes and demonstrated their expertise by answering detailed questions designed to test both knowledge and critical thinking. Their strong performances earned them notable placings, with Reece securing 8th place in Halter and 9th Overall, and Rowan achieving 10th in Performance, 11th Overall, and 11th in Halter. Congratulations to both students.

The Luna County DWI Planning Council recently met to review the application process for LDWI Special Application Funds, a state-supported resource aimed at strengthening local efforts to combat alcohol-related issues. These funds are specifically intended to supplement existing programs by addressing service gaps and supporting new initiatives that target prevention, enforcement, and treatment. The funding will help reduce drunk driving incidents, curb underage drinking, and mitigate the broader impacts of alcohol misuse on the community.

New Mexico Senator Gabriel Ramos attended the recent Hidalgo County Commission meeting to provide the board with an update on projects funded during the most recent legislative session. The Hidalgo County Road Department received significant support, allowing for the purchase of a chip spreader, implements for existing equipment, and a new trailer. In other business, the Commission approved New Mexico Capital Outlay Grant agreements to support border communication systems, public safety vehicles, and additional Road Department equipment.

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) has announced the availability of financial assistance to support regional behavioral health planning across New Mexico. Through this funding opportunity, up to $45,000 will be awarded to one local, tribal, or quasi-governmental organization in each of the state’s 13 behavioral health regions, which include Grant, Luna, and Hidalgo counties. The funding is intended to support the coordination and development of regional plans for delivering behavioral health services. Eligible expenses include establishing planning committees, conducting committee meetings and community listening sessions, and hosting workshops to identify existing behavioral health resources and address service gaps within each region.
