The U.S. Forest Service is seeking public comment on a proposed rule to modernize its internal directives system by simplifying procedures, promoting innovation, and giving more decision-making authority to field employees. The proposal would also eliminate most regional and local directive supplements to create more consistent policies across all Forest Service units. Grant County commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing Pinos Altos and the surrounding area as important historical and ecological assets. The proclamation, which is symbolic and carries no legal authority, was supported by residents concerned about the potential for future large-scale mining near the historic community. Commissioners also unanimously approved and authorized the issuance of $3.5 million in voter-approved general obligation bonds for public building improvements and county road projects, with officials noting the bonds will be repaid through existing taxes without increasing property taxes.
