Summer improvement projects are underway at Harrison Schmitt Elementary School, where contractors have begun the first phase of a major flooring upgrade in the original section of the campus. The project includes the safe removal of asbestos-containing floor materials from classrooms, hallways and common areas, followed by new flooring installation. Funded by Silver Consolidated Schools, the work is part of more than $435,000 invested in asbestos abatement and facility improvements this year, with additional roofing and playground upgrades planned for the future.

The Grant County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on June 4  at 4 p.m. at the Gila Valley Library to gather public input on the county’s Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP) for Fiscal Years 2028–2032. The ICIP serves as a planning tool that helps establish priorities for anticipated capital projects and infrastructure needs throughout Grant County. The program encourages local governments to proactively plan for future development, reduce the likelihood of emergency infrastructure issues, and support sustainable growth.
