On September 6th, thirty-two Western New Mexico University nursing students participated in a Purple Coat Ceremony, marking the start of their clinical education and commitment to compassionate care. Modeled after the “White Coat Ceremony” from Columbia University, the event included an oath and the donning of purple scrub jackets, reflecting the university’s colors. The ceremony emphasized the importance of empathy, communication, and teamwork in their supportive educational environment at WNMU.

Starting Monday, September 16th, the Gila National Forest’s Silver City Ranger District will be expanding the parking area at Dragonfly Trailhead to accommodate increased visitor demand, help alleviate parking issues and to support future events proposed by the public. During construction, which involves heavy equipment, visitors might consider using alternative access points for Fort Bayard area trails. The improvements will result in two parking lots: one for large vehicles and buses, and a newly redesigned lot for pull-through traffic with dedicated entrance and exit points. The project, which includes clearing, installing culverts, and extending the pipe rail fence, is expected to take several weeks to complete.
