Western New Mexico University is expanding its telemental health training and services to improve access to mental health care in rural and underserved communities across New Mexico. Through its fully online Master of Counseling program, students are trained to provide virtual counseling in areas including mental health, rehabilitation, school, and addiction counseling. The initiative aims to address counselor shortages by preparing professionals to deliver remote care, while also offering students 24/7 telehealth support services. The effort is designed to reduce barriers to care and strengthen the state’s rural mental health workforce.
The U.S. Forest Service and the New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association have partnered with rural electric cooperatives statewide to create a new framework for managing powerline utility permits on National Forest System lands in New Mexico. The initiative is designed to improve coordination, streamline permit processes, support vegetation management and wildfire mitigation efforts, and strengthen the reliability of electric and broadband infrastructure serving rural communities. The guidance will apply to existing and future utility permits across New Mexico’s five national forests and will be reviewed annually to address changing operational and regulatory needs.
Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County is seeking volunteer drivers to help transport local cancer patients to medical appointments and treatments. The nonprofit provides free transportation assistance, gas vouchers for qualifying patients, and a variety of support services for cancer patients and their families.
