Aldo Leopold Charter School drama students recently participated in the 67th annual High School Drama Festival, which consists of one-act plays presented by schools, workshops, social gatherings and networking opportunities for students from every corner of New Mexico. Aldo Leopold won an “Excellency in Self-Written Work” award for their original play entitled “ALCS’s Dreamy Drama Dramatizations”, which they will be performing in Silver City sometime next month. Congratulations to all the students.
During the recent Silver City Town Council regular meeting, members of the Housing and Behavioral Health Taskforce spoke about the organization and the services they provide. The organization, which was formed last May, provides community-centered solutions to complex challenges and helps identify, discuss and recommend short and long term solutions to minimize the effect housing costs and behavioral health instability has on Grant County residents. The task force will have four committees that consist of advocacy and education, law enforcement, street outreach and basic needs which will be focused on connecting community members to local resources and developing solutions. The Silver City Watershed Keepers held a “Planting Day” as part of the Gila Resources Information Project’s River Stewardship Stream Restoration Project this past weekend. Volunteers and Aldo Leopold YCC students planted over 50 native trees and shrubs along the San Vicente Creek. They also helped build check dams in Agave Arroyo, a tributary to San Vicente Creek, to slow down stormwater runoff and prevent erosion of the sewer line. This week volunteers are working on building grade control structures and stabilizing the log jam in the creek.
