For the Fall 2025 grant season, Single Socks announced the award of $63,000 to seven applicants in support of local anti-hunger initiatives. Funding was distributed to Aldo Leopold Charter School, Casa Luna, The Commons, the Mimbres Valley Health Action League (MVHAL), Silver City Gospel Mission, Silver City Street Outreach, and Supporting People In Need (SPIN). All grants are made possible through the generosity of its donors and the dedication of the volunteers and staff at Single Socks.
Deming Public Schools will host a community “Connect with the Superintendent” session on Tuesday, December 9 at 9 a.m. at Deming High School. The agenda will include a safety update for the high school and a federal programs report outlining Title I allocations, dual-language initiatives, and other district updates. The event is open to families and community members interested in learning more about the district’s ongoing programs and student support efforts.
The Quemado Ranger District of the Gila National Forest plans to begin prescribed fire operations pending all required approvals. Planned projects include the Baca slash pit, located approximately two miles northeast of Quemado Lake, where ignitions are scheduled to begin today, December 4. The pit will be closed to public slash disposal and monitored for several weeks, reopening once conditions are deemed safe. Additional operations will take place on thinning piles near the Luna Work Center and on private property south of Luna, with ignitions expected to start the week of December 15 and continue throughout the winter as weather and environmental conditions permit.

The Silver City MainStreet Project recently announced the winners of its 35th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade, “Winter Wonderland.” First-place honors were awarded to the U.S. Forest Service and Guadalupe Montessori School in the Civic Category, and to 1st New Mexico Bank featuring Sixth Street Elementary School in the Business Category. Individual Category went to Michael Acosta. Second-place recognition went to El Grito del Bosque Childcare in the Civic Category, Freeport-McMoRan in the Business Category, and Olson’s Vintage Fire Truck in the Individual Category. Third-place awards were presented to Silver FFA in the Civic Category and The Bike Works/Silver City Cycles in the Business Category. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.
