The Freeport-McMoRan Foundation has awarded $450,000 to Grant County as part of $3 million awarded to 55 projects in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico and Texas through its Community and Social Investment Fund process. The Freeport-McMoRan Foundation works with a range of committed partners throughout the investment process and has an ongoing partnership with True Impact, allowing organizations to forecast the impact of their project in the community. The funds will be awarded to programs and projects that help foster sustainability such as the Center for Health Innovation/Public Health Institute, City of Bayard Community Center revitalization, Future Forge, Grant County Community Foundation, Tyrone Water and Wastewater Association and Western New Mexico University’s Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education Therapeutic Program. Recipient organizations will receive their awards and be recognized by members of the Community Investment Committee during presentations in the upcoming months.
This Holiday season, Grant County Masons from the Lodges in Grant County, with the assistance of some of their wives and other volunteers, invited 105 children to shop for the Holidays. Their annual event “Clothe a Child” raised over $13,000 to help clothe Grant County children in need and is one of the many charitable events supported by the Grant County Masons each year. Each child was chosen by the Grant County School nurses and received $125 in funds to purchase any type of clothing they needed.
During the “Wreaths Across America” ceremony that took place this past weekend, over 4,610 wreaths were laid at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Guest speakers, the Cobre High School Honor Society and family and friends all came together to honor and celebrate veterans. The program first began at Fort Bayard in 2009, when seven wreaths were laid and has grown every year since with each headstone receiving a wreath. The mission for the Wreaths Across America program is to honor those who have served our country, remember all fallen veterans and to help teach the next generation the value and importance of freedom.
