Aldo Leopold Charter School’s 9th grade Cultural Geography class recently visited the Chino Mine to learn about the history of mining in Grant County and the role the industry plays in today’s economy. Students had the opportunity to learn on-site safety training, view the mine operations area and went on a pit and mill tour. The goal of the trip was to help students gain a better understanding of how the mining industry fits into the profile of state, local and national economies.
The College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences is going to be having a free Grant County “Gardening 101” class this evening, April 18th from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Grant County Extension Office. The class will cover garden planning, soil prep, soil types, testing seed germination, irrigation and companion planting. The class will also be providing research and science based information and publications on gardening.
Residents of the Town of Mogollon are getting ready for their May event to celebrate 100 years of the Gila Wilderness. Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. on May 25th at the Mogollon Cemetery Archives and will travel together to the Mogollon Cemetery where the organizers of this event will speak about the area, the Gila Wilderness centennial anniversary and the importance of historic preservation. The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District has implemented an area closure while they conduct the 2,010-acre Cameron Creek Prescribed Fire project. The area closure will remain in effect until the area is safe for public re-entry, likely until the end of the week. Some of the area closures include: Trails #727 Fence Line, #758 Cornell Ranch, Grant County Road 1-0152 on the east and Forest Road 110 on the south. As a reminder, applications for the “Legacy Scholarship” are still being accepted. The scholarship is in honor of lifelong educators, administrators and coaches serving Hidalgo County schools. Scholarships will be awarded to two Hidalgo County High School seniors upon acceptance from a college or university of their choice who exhibit outstanding scholastic and leadership ability.
