The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District recently completed trailhead improvements along Red Rock Road and Forest Ridge Road for the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail in the Burro Mountains southwest of Silver City. The Gila National Forest road crew constructed new graded, graveled parking areas along Red Rock Road and Forest Ridge Road over the past several weeks which will help accommodate parked vehicles and vehicles with trailers. This project completes the Silver City Ranger District’s phased efforts for upgrading Continental Divide trailheads in the Burro Mountains making Red Rock Road and Forest Ridge Road open and ready for use.
The Mimbres Valley Health Action League will be hosting their 16th annual Mimbres Valley Harvest Festival, tomorrow, October 7th. The festival will showcase locally grown food, local artisans and handmade products. They will also have music, a free health fair, pie contests, children’s activities and much more. The festival will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the San Lorenzo Elementary School and all are invited to attend.
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the non-profit organization, Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services (SRSASS) is reminding all Grant County residents of the services they provide. SRSASS provides services to survivors of sexual violence and their families through crisis intervention, community education, counseling services, advocacy and support and assistance with food, transportation and housing. In partnership with Genoa Healthcare, the WNMU School of Nursing will be hosting a flu vaccination clinic on Wednesday, October 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The clinic will be held at the School of Nursing and will offer flu shots to WNMU faculty, staff, students as well as community members. The clinic will be free but those who have insurance are encouraged to bring their insurance cards.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Off-Highway Vehicle Program recently awarded eight 2023-24 grant cycle awards for the OHV law enforcement overtime patrols. Two of the recipients of the awards were the Luna County Sheriff’s Office who received $8,000 and the Deming Police Department who received $15,000. Since 2011, the OHV Program has awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to nonprofits, land management and law-enforcement agencies to help address areas of concern utilizing OHV-specific overtime enforcement patrols, OHV safety training classes to certify juveniles and to by conducting outreach events informing the public on OHV safety requirements. To date, thousands of hours have been dedicated by law enforcement on public lands to help keep New Mexicans of all ages safe.
