Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio.

At the time of compiling this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced a total of 84,148 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases statewide, an increase of 2,259 new cases. In addition, COVID-19 cases recorded locally are as follows: Grant County increased 6 new cases for a total of 440 positive cases; Luna County increased 16 new cases for a total of 1,810 positive cases; Hidalgo County increased 4 new cases for a total 170 total positive cases; and Catron County has remained at 33 positive cases. Statewide, there are 846 COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The New Mexico Legislature is meeting in a special session today to take up a relief package for New Mexicans who have been affected by the economic damage caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the proposed legislation the governor has requested to take up include:

  • $194 million in direct unemployment assistance
  • $100 million grant program for New Mexico-owned small businesses
  • $15 million to provide for emergency housing assistance
  • $5 million for emergency food bank services
  • $5 million for direct economic assistance to low-income residents
  • Additional funding necessary to support administrative organization and execution of the new programs

In addition, the proposed legislation would appropriate $10 million from the state general fund to the Department of Health to provide for COVID-19 testing, contact tracing and vaccine implementation support.

The Silver City Museum’s annual Arte Chicano will be released as a virtual exhibit in early December, a slight delay from the planned November 20th release.
