The Silver City Town Council recently approved a resolution authorizing a $1.4 million loan and grant agreement with the New Mexico Finance Authority to support construction of a new sewer bypass on Mill Road. The council also unanimously passed a resolution notifying the public of its intent to amend the town’s land use and zoning codes. In addition, the council proclaimed the week of October 5–11 as Fire Prevention Week, highlighting the importance of lithium-ion battery safety in the home and encouraging residents to visit the National Fire Protection Association’s website for more information.

The New Mexico Public Education Department has named Mr. Lee Wilson of Silver High School as a finalist for the 2026 New Mexico Teacher of the Year. A veteran educator with 30 years of experience, Mr. Wilson teaches high school social studies and serves as the lead sponsor of National History Day (NHD) at Silver High. His work with NHD helps students build confidence in research, writing, and public speaking—skills that prepare them for success in higher education, careers, and beyond. Mr. Wilson is being recognized for fostering a culture of academic pride and achievement, where students challenge themselves, support one another, and take pride in shared accomplishments. During a special meeting, the Cobre Consolidated Schools Board of Education welcomed Bayard Police Chief Hector Carrillo as its newest member. Known for his deep ties to the community, Mr. Carrillo brings a blend of law enforcement expertise, coaching experience, and public service to the role. Drawing on his years working with youth, his professional background, and his time as a Santa Clara village trustee, Mr. Carrillo plans on working to help support students and strengthen the district.

The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) has issued a Request for Information to gather public input that will guide the state’s strategic approach to applying for and implementing the federal Rural Health Transformation Program. Key areas of focus include leveraging technology for chronic disease management and developing strategies to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of rural hospitals. The HCA is seeking feedback from healthcare providers, patients, Tribal communities, associations, advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders to help prioritize funding areas for the greatest impact.
