The Commons Center for Food Security and Sustainability is excited to announce the return of its Alimento School Program. This initiative collaborates with local schools to develop customized food distribution programs tailored to the unique needs of students and families at each school. The program offers a variety of services, including weekend backpacks, family food boxes, snack bags, in-school food distribution, and school farm stands. Currently, The Commons serves 13 schools across the Cobre and Silver School districts.

An informal meeting for residents of Pinos Altos and surrounding areas is scheduled for Thursday, March 20th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Pinos Altos Opera House. Lucy Whitmarsh, former chief of Pinos Altos Volunteer Fire and Rescue, will share insights on how her neighborhood, Dos Griegos, achieved designation as an official Firewise Community. Following her presentation, a local Pinos Altos couple will discuss their efforts to create defensible space on their property while preserving the natural beauty of the mountain forest. The meeting aims to provide valuable wildfire mitigation information and foster a sense of community among residents.

The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) is proud to announce the recipients of the prestigious 2024-2025 NMAA Foundation Scholarships. This year, nearly 350 talented and dedicated students submitted applications, competing for a share of $79,000 awarded across 66 unique scholarships. Among this year’s outstanding scholars is Laikyn Davenport, a student from Animas High School, who has been selected to receive the $1,500 Pedro & Mateo Sandoval Strong Family Scholarship, recognizing her exceptional achievements and commitment to excellence.
