The Gila National Forest offers dozens of campgrounds to support recreational camping. Many of these sites are open year-round and a few have been closed but are preparing to open for camping. In the Silver City Ranger District, Iron Creek, McMillan, and Cherry Creek campgrounds have been reopened after temporary closure due to ice hazards and the Mesa Campground and Upper End Campground are now open for camping. Snow Lake, the Dipping Vat Campground is open, but the water system will not be turned on until early May, depending on weather conditions. Quemado Lake, Pinon and Juniper campgrounds will open for the season on May 10th.
Silver Consolidated Schools will be having a session entitled “Your Active Child: ADHD” on March 13th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The session will feature discussions on symptoms, challenges and solutions to helping children that may have ADHD. All those interested can join the discussion at the Administration Office Board Room, located at 2810 North Swan Street.
The Silver City Future Farmers of America had many team and individual wins at the Las Cruces Career Development Event (CDE) this past weekend. The Silver City Team won first place in AG Mechanics and Horse, 2nd place in Vet Science and 3rd place in Pasture and Range. First place winner in Horse went to Sarah Gardner, second place winners were Colter Massengill in AG Mechanics, Tanner Frost in Horse and Tiffany Bernstein in Vet Science and third place went to Kathryn Woodward in AG Mechanics. Congratulations to all the winners and participants.
The Silver City Gospel Mission has announced the expansion of their garden project to the Women and Children’s Shelter grounds, which has enabled them to grow a more comprehensive array of produce. This expansion will help diversify the food sources the mission provides and will empower the shelter’s residents by involving them in growing. The resident’s participation will also help towards healing and self-sufficiency, contributing to the overall well-being of the community. In New Mexico News: Are you inspired by the art and culture of New Mexico? The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) has launched a statewide poetry contest dedicated to finding written inspiration about pieces of artwork. Participants will have the opportunity to write and submit poetry that describes artwork across New Mexico. The contest will include a youth category that includes 6th to 12th graders and an adult category. All poetry must be submitted by March 31st.
