The Wilderness Ranger District on the Gila National Forest has canceled the Cooney Canyon slash pile burns that were scheduled to begin this week, approximately six miles north of the Mimbres Valley. Fire management staff determined that current fuel moisture levels, forecasted relative humidity, and anticipated dry and warm weather conditions are not conducive to safe ignition at this time. The Gila National Forest will issue additional public notices if the prescribed burn is rescheduled.

At Animas Public Schools, freshman members of the Superintendent Student Leadership Advisory Council (SSLAC) are turning initiative into impact by launching a healthy snack concession stand that complies with state and federal school nutrition regulations. The student-led project reinvests weekly profits back into the program, creating a sustainable model that supports ongoing activities. Beyond campus, the SSLAC team is preparing to represent the school at the legislative session in February, where they will advocate for programs and funding on behalf of Animas Schools, Hidalgo County, and rural New Mexico, giving student voices a direct role in shaping policy and opportunity.
