Data from the Silver City Police Department’s “Citizen Contact” initiative, which started in 2023, shows that the majority of residents in Silver City feel that police officers in the community are approachable and trustworthy. The initiative involves police officers asking citizens that they come in contact with during their shift questions regarding their concerns about the community. It is also part of the department’s ongoing commitment engagement efforts, which include participating in local community events, school-based programs, summer events for kids and off-duty conversations that officers experience while working in the community. The initiative was developed to help police officers track how community members feel about the effectiveness of the police department and to better understand community members’ concerns.
