The Gila National Forest, Black Range Ranger District is preparing to implement a prescribed fire in the 3,321-acre Area 74, Unit 3 prescribed fire project between April 28th and May 10th. The Area 74, Unit 3 project is located approximately 3 miles west of Poverty Creek and west of the Continental Divide Trail therefore, public access to the trail during prescribed fire operations will be affected. A detour has been identified, following Highway 59 west to Forest Road 3017 and other Forest Roads that lead to the Continental Divide Trail. In honor of “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day”, the City of Deming will be taking unused and expired medications tomorrow, April 27th. This event will take place at the Deming Senior Center and all those looking to dispose of medications that they no longer need are encouraged to stop by between 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

The Silver Consolidated Schools Security Team has been training and preparing these past months, due to the new armed guards policy, to help take campus safety to the next level. The team has completed extensive training including psychology evaluations, special education training, de-escalation CPI techniques, meeting physical requirements and much more. Security personnel are training to be better prepared and equipped as armed guards to help protect students and staff. The armed guard policy is set to take place as early as Monday, April 29th.

Luna County Sergeant Valerie Tyler was recently recognized at the US Department of Justice Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony that took place in Las Cruces. Sergeant Tyler was recognized for her hard work and dedication in the case of US versus Jeffrey Biddle, who was sentenced to life in federal prison for molesting at least 12 children. Congratulations to Sergeant Tyler and thank you for service to the community.

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department is warning taxpayers about fraudulent demand letters going out to property owners who are delinquent on their tax payments. The letters state to call a 1-800 number by a certain date or the state will seize the owners property. These letters are not from the state Taxation and Revenue Department. Anyone who suspects they have encountered fraudulent activity can contact the Department through the Fraud Hotline at 1-866-457-6789. That is 1-866-457-6789.
